Fun scarf and an orange cardigan

Hey, look! I got dressed in something other than yoga pants! I’m still in a t-shirt, but at least it looks more professional.

fun scarf, orange cardigan
Betsey johnson earrings

Tee: Gap body, thrifted (exact)
Pants: Old Navy (exact)
Cardigan: Nine West, Marshalls (similar)
Scarf: Calvin Klein, Marshalls
Earrings: Betsey Johnson, Nordstrom Rack
Shoes: Target (last fall, I think) (similar)

This outfit is basically step one in figuring out what the hell my “style” is. I like quirky things like the lightning bolt earrings (they remind me of Harry Potter!) and the colorful scarf. But I feel more subdued than I have previously. I’m thinking tees and flats are my new go-to and I’m OK with that! Totally off topic, but have you read Jen’s post about bras? I’ve been wearing the wrong size since I was 15 and never thought it was wrong! Turns out I was off by a band size AND two cup sizes. Amazing what a better fitting bra can do for your back problems and your clothes!

Michigan bloggers, unite!

On Saturday, Liz helped me schlep some stuff to the park in Ann Arbor, for our meetup and clothes swap. It was really nice to see the ladies I’ve hung out with before (Jacelyn, Katie, Alicia), and meet some new faces (Sara, Cat, Brittney and Tiffany). There were a few other ladies that were planning to attend but one got lost (uhoh!) and the other had something else come up. It’s a bummer because they’re both so fabulous and I love seeing them, so next time we’ll get them out to Ann Arbor.

Liz and I picked up some Faygo and Better Made chips (Michigan brands, if you’re from out-of-state). I also made up some blogger bingo cards and we all chatted, and three ladies walked away with some pretty sweet prizes c/o my wallet (yeah, I just wrote that.).

Speedy Girl sent an item for each attendee there, which was really fun. Liz helped me go through the items before the meetup, and I pointed things out I thought each attendee would like, and I was spot on with many of them! (This is what happens when you read someone’s fashion blog a lot- you learn their style!).

Anika Burke also sent rings for the ladies, and I have to say, they were all amazing! Cat’s perfectly matched her outfit. In fact, I think I asked her a few times if she was sure that’s the one she got, because it was just too perfect!

The ring in this photo… seriously perfect match!

I found myself wearing what I already predicted would become my fall go-to outfit, and it looks like I’m right!

Dress (as a top): c/o Shop Speedy Girl
Skirt: Old Navy
Shoes: Target

Saturday I drove up to Ludington to watch my friends Carrie and Knoll get married. Knowing it was a long drive, I wanted to be comfortable, but I also wanted to be ready and able to change in a rest stop bathroom, if I was running late.

So I opted for my new dress, worn as a top, with a flowy skirt. Green-on-green matches, right? Well it does in my mind.

I have a longer post coming up about Shop Speedy Girl, to talk about how awesome it is. I like to say it’s like the Groupon of shopping, because it really is. And how cute is the top with the crocheted back and cat print? It’s the same brand as the phoenix dress I own that I (also) often wear as a top, so it’s a given that I’m going to love it.

Sometimes I can’t take a serious photo to save my life. Or a photo that doesn’t look weird. Take these for example:

IMG_8876 IMG_8863

I decided I wanted to blow a bubble for one photo, because I thought it would be cute, until I realized I had no idea what I was doing. And as for the other one, I have no idea why my feet are so far apart! Cute outfit, but awkward poses.

And thanks for the nice comments on my last post. I wasn’t knocking magazines, but trying to describe why I don’t read them. I get the craft of designing and sewing and why it makes their items expensive, but I think it’s kind of ridiculous that designers and these magazine editors tell us (the consumers) what is fashionable and what we should be wearing. Can’t I just wear what I want and not worry if I’m in style or not? For the most part I do that, but sometimes, especially if I read magazines, I find myself getting swamped with the idea of “needing” this trendy item or that trendy item. It’s better for my mental health and my wallet if I don’t read magazines, because then I don’t feel like I “need” something to complete my wardrobe.

(See? Now you’re getting an inner look at my psyche, and I bet you’re not prepared for the way I look at the world.)

The ducks are OK!

Top: Old Navy
Pants: Micheal Kors via Marshalls
Shoes: c/o Wanted
Belt and necklace: Forever 21

This outfit feels like a mix of something Kendi and Linley would wear, although I bought the shirt after Katie pinned it, so maybe that means it’s more her style? I don’t know. All I know is I am sick of the heat. I ignored the weather warnings and wore this outfit anyway, despite the fact that it’s like a sweaty, sweaty armpit outside. Yuck.

But, in happier news, the ducks are ok! What ducks, you ask? The momma duck and her three babies that were trying to cross the freeway yesterday. They were in the second lane of our five lanes, and it just made me really sad! But, my coworker was happy to report there were no ducks (living or dead) on the road when she passed by that same area a little while later. That means Sally, Huey, Duey and Louis all lived! (Yes, I named them.) I can have a good day today, because they lived.

I went a little pink-crazy…

IMG_7952

Oh hi. What’s up? Nothing’s really new over here, except that I dyed some of my hair pink. And I got really dressed up for work. Dontcha love the tie? It’s perfect for those “whoops, I overslept” days.

See? Pink!

Top: Old!
Jeans: Gap
Belt: Old Navy
Shoes: c/o Wanted
Bracelet: Won from Kie and Kate

I didn’t bother doing the color scheme of this outfit because it’s pretty much pink, pink, pink and black. Kinda simple. And this shirt? I’ve had it for probably as long as I’ve been with Joe, which is about seven years. So I have no idea where I bought it!

I’ve probably mentioned this before, but back in college I went through some interesting hair color phases. Pink, fire engine red (similar to how Rihanna’s has been lately) and purple, to name a few. Even as recently as last summer I had pink streaks in my hair. I guess it’s in my nature to what to change things up, even it’s just for a short period of time. I use Manic Panic every time I dye my hair odd colors, and depending on how often I was my hair, it usually stays in for about two weeks. We’ll see how long this lasts!

The faux tank dress

Last year, I was obsessed with this dress:

It came with a red skirt, orange skirt, or, my favorite, the green skirt. But it (and the less expensive versions) all sold out before I could get my hands on one.

When I was sorting out my winter clothes last weekend (it was still 40 degrees last week!), I found a long-lost Forever 21 striped tank top I’ve had since college (and who says Forever 21 clothes don’t last?!). I knew I had the PERFECT green skirt to pair it with to make my own faux tank dress.

Now I’m kinda glad I didn’t spend my money on the dress. I’m sure I spent it on shoes, food or toilet paper. My guess is food.

And just to warn you all, my skin will remain this same glowing white color throughout summer. You may want to invest in some shades. ( I do not tan. At all. Partly by choice and partly because my pale Irish skin disagrees with the sun.)

An outfit stolen from Kendi and Jenni, and a survey

IMG_7067 copy
6-1-2011
I’m very lukewarm about this outfit. Well, maybe not the outfit. It’s the hair. I get very lazy with my hair in the summertime, and this year is obviously no exception. Maybe I’ll attempt twenty different hairstyles in the next twenty days or something. This would count as one, right? (lame-o ponytail, check!)

This outfit is basically the opposite of this ones Kendi and Jenni wore. Olive on the bottom and blue on top. Half copying, half my own and half flattering, yeah?

Anyway, after the amazing feedback yesterday (thank you. Really, thank you), I decided to post what I had originally intended, which is a short reader survey for you guys. I’m trying to implement some good changes around here, but I also want to make sure you like what you’re reading. So, please take a few and answer one, two or all of the following questions (you can also email me at vinylahoy (at) gmail.com, if you prefer):

1. How often do you read Miss Vinyl Ahoy?

2. What is your favorite part of Miss Vinyl Ahoy?

3. How long have you been reading and how did you found out about the blog?

4. What would you like to see more of?

5. What would you like to see less of?

6. Would you like to read about other things beside what I’m wearing and DIY/how-to posts? (recipes, lifestyle, my marriage, celeb fashions, etc)

7. Would you be interested in vlogs? If so, what kinds? (about my outfit, DIY, answering questions, etc)

8. How often would you like to see new DIY/how-to posts? Do you have any you’d like to see?

9. What do you think about advertising on blogs (in general, or on this one)?

10. Any other thoughts you have to make Miss Vinyl Ahoy a better blog for you, the reader?

Thanks!! (PS- just know that even if you try to answer anonymously, WordPress collects the IP address you’re using, so if you’re saying something not-so-nice, and you’ve commented before, I may be able to tell that it’s you. Creative criticisms are allowed and encouraged. Just wanting to give you full disclosure before you tell me off or something!)

The one that I wore in urgent care

128_7108
May 24, 2011
128_7104

This outfit never saw the light of day beyond my apartment walls and the walls of urgent care. This, my friends, is what I was wearing on Monday, when I had some random allergic reaction (you may have seen my tweets).

Joe and I are still not sure what caused the reaction, and are being very careful to wash everything in the apartment, and we’re keeping an eye on everything I touch, just in case. Most of my hives are gone, or at least they’re not as glaring red. My upper arms and back are still really itchy, so Benadryl has become my best friend. The only good thing? It doesn’t make me sleepy. In fact, it almost makes me hyper, so I can still drive and function.

I’m also very aware of how long my bangs are. I just can’t decide if I want to continue to trim them, or if I’m ready to let them grow out again. I’ve had them for two years, and I don’t think anyone has really seen me without them.

Don’t forget to enter the giveaway!

Rain is really cramping my style. Literally.

Necklace: Bella Dawn
Jeans: Old Navy

Rain is really getting in my way. It’s been going on much too long. I’m getting sick of not taking photos, or feeling like I want to take them, only to have it start raining. Ugh.

Bella Dawn sent me this necklace to review. I’m fairly certain they picked this one because it’s super bright! Anyway, you’ve already seen me wear it a few times, like here and here. And I gotta say, it’s a pretty awesome necklace. I tossed it into my suitcase a few weekends ago to visit my sister, and it didn’t even tangle. It has a decent weight to it, so it’s not one of those necklaces that feels like it’s only made of plastic. My neck hasn’t turned green and I haven’t had a reaction, so it’s also not made with cheap products either.

I really like this necklace (and not just because of the color!). It’s still available on their website, if you’re interested.

And to my other point of business for the day. I wasn’t planning to host another Paper Doll Project until July, but it appears as though many people are really excited about the project. So, I’m going to let you guys vote.
If we did one sooner, it would be June 21th. If we waited until July, it would be July 19th. Pick one, both, or suggest an alternative date in the comments.
