Princes’ kept the view

Top, jacket: Forever 21
Skirt: Gift, Express (last season)
Shoes: Nine West via Ebay
Tights: Love Colour, Love Tights
Necklace: Hand-me-down

I haven’t worn this skirt or top on the blog since March, so I figured they were due another shot. Joe has dubbed this top my “watchtower top” and began singing Jimi Hendrix to me. It was an interesting Tuesday morning, to say the least.
No one seemed to think my clock/stripe/floral outfit was weird at work. Although having to break into my coworker’s office may have taken away some of the attention (heh). (She accidentally locked her keys in her office; the only other copy was with a person across the state who won’t be back until Monday.)

When I was at work, one of the ladies asked, off hand, “how many closet full of clothes” I owned.

When I told her I had one closet that I shared with my husband, she looked shocked. I felt slightly uncomfortable. I make probably half of her salary, purchase nice clothes when I can, shop thrifty and try to save my money, yet here she is assuming I have TONS of clothes. I suppose I should take it as a compliment, since it highlights how will I mix up everything, yet all I could think about was “why do people think I have so much clothes?!”

Maybe others don’t pay as much attention to my clothing as I do, especially if they don’t see me all the time. I rewear everything I own in different ways. I never wear an outfit the same way twice, because that’s apparently how I live my life.

Maybe I’m creating a mountain out of a molehill. How about it, readers? Have you had someone ask you about your closet space and the amount of clothing you own? What’d you say? What would you say now if someone asked?

    • LOL- I knew you’d love the skirt πŸ™‚ It’s a tad too big in the waist, but fits really well in the hip, so I think I need to take it in some.

  1. Great look. I’ve definitely had people ask me about my closet space…truth is, I really don’t have enough. But maybe it’s more because of all my shoes than my clothes. Whatever the reason, it doesn’t bother me. It’s my money and I can spend it however I’d like, right?!

    • Exactly! It was just the way this woman asked me, like she was shocked I could possibly own the much/little… I didn’t really like it!

  2. i’ve never had anyone ask me about closet size, but i feel that b/c i don’t dress as “cookie cutter” as everyone else i work with, there is more attention to what i wear. not negative attention…i actually get lots of compliments! i think some people are just used to walking into a chain store (banana, jcrew, etc.) and just buy off the rack without putting much more thought into what they wear. which is FINE! its just not me (and, from what i gather, not you!). so when you mix & match, throw in a little thrift, you have many more options, looking like a lot! i would take it as a compliment! πŸ™‚

    • That’s where my mind is going now, but I think i was just shocked yesterday (especially when I was writing this).
I own lots of “mall” stuff and lots of thrifted stuff, and like I said, I never wear the same outfit twice, so I assume that’s why she asked. It was just odd!

  3. I thought it was a dress until you pointed out that it wasn’t, they were meant to be together! And I always love a high heel and a bun. So so sexy. But demure. But sexy.

  4. I seriously love the top and the skirt together!

My friends always act like I have a ton of clothes but I really don’t. I have a small closet and I give clothes away constantly!

  5. I think it’s a flattering comment and really speaks to how you can do a lot with very few items. PLUS it’s different when you photograph your outfits every day. If things got redundant, it would be obvious. On days when I have no outfit photo, I have no recollection of what I wore. And in terms of coworkers, do you remember what any of yours were wearing last week? I dont, unless it’s something I liked. I will definitely notice when my coworker wears her yatch

  6. I love those shoes! I have yet to try the ebay hunt for shoes. Do you just go in knowing what you are looking for and search for it? Or are you just browsing at first? I need to get on that…

Closet space… jesus. I need more. My friends come over and are shocked at my closet and how full it is. But if you ask me I have just the right amount of clothes. And I totally agree with the above comment, I’m sure 80% of people can’t even remember what we were wearing a week ago. Especially men, they just don’t give a crap πŸ™‚

    • These I was looking specifically for. I’m not a very good “go on ebay and search around” person. I usually know exactly what I want πŸ™‚

Sometimes I can remember (without looking at photos) if I really liked/disliked the outfit. But men don’t care, LOL

  7. Haven’t got that compliment yet… It’s because I have no chance here of mixing up clothes. They always end up the same. Top/dress + pants/skirt or maybe add a jacket or scarf… I can’t wear too much clothes because of the weather so my outfits look the same, always. T.T

You seem to have lots of clothes for me as well. πŸ™‚ You seemed to have a whole room as your closet.

  8. I can’t believe this is a skirt and top, I thought it was one awesome dress! And, it’s incredibly flattering one you!
I don’t get asked about the quantity of clothing I have or closet space too often, but when I do I’ll say something like, “I work with what I have.” or “I love to find a good sale.” Sometimes it’s hard to tell if it’s a compliment, an envious comment, or a snarky remark about over consumption or obsession over appearance. Best to always react as if it’s a compliment, I guess!

  9. I thought that was a dress too. The top and skirt go so well together.

I think that people ask about your closet space because your wardrobe stands out, and I think it should be taken as a compliment because it means that you are doing a good job of stretching your wardrobe.

  10. I love this pairing! The printed top and the printed skirt are an amazing combo.

I get asked all time how many closets of clothes I have. One of my co-workers said that I could probably go a whole year without buying anything new and no re-wear one thing in my closet.

    • Thanks girl! πŸ™‚
I wouldn’t want to go a whole year without re-wearing stuff. It would get boring. You’d get down to the white t-shirts and khakis…

  11. 1. I love this look. I read it from my phone yesterday, and I thought it was a dress until I read the description, but i still couldn’t make out the top vs. the skirt on the small screen of my phone. Very well done!

    2. You should definitely take it as a compliment and a testament to your styling ability. Some folks just don’t have it and they DO own closets and closets full of clothes that they don’t even wear because they don’t know how!

    • 1. I love that you read this from your phone (I can’t do that yet!), and I’m beginning to think this outfit SHOULD be a dress, LOL
      2. I think I’m working on it being a compliment, LOL

  12. Hi Suze, yes, this is a molehill. And yes, I told the whole blogging community how much closet space I have because it really isn’t a big deal. Your “many” clothes might be someone’s “not enough” and vice versa. It’s all what you do with what you have and you, dear, do a damn good job!

  13. Love this outfit…you look great! I would just brush the comment off–you really do make a lot out of what you have, and I really love that about you. I’m all about living within one’s means rather than just accumulating stuff (although I have been known to love new stuff from time to time).

    • I think everyone loves new stuff. I try to make my “new stuff” very minimal purchases, like scarves, tops or a skirt here and there that I can mix and match with stuff I already own. I like the clothes I already own, so if I’m going to add to that collection, I want it to be awesome stuff that I can continue to mix and match.

  14. Ha! I’m a new reader, so the outfit seems new to me…and at first I took it for a paired combo (like you bought it that way). I love the skirt!

As for breaking into the office, I’ve had to do that too…only we climbed over a cubicle wall.
